Welcome! My name is Dr. Aretha Steele, and I truly believe that healing and growth are possible.
I’m a Black, cisgender woman, a proud mom of three, a loving wife, and the owner of two lively dogs who fill my home with joy and chaos in the best way. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, I deeply understand the challenges and resilience that shape our stories. While my education and credentials are important, what truly matters to me is creating a genuine, supportive connection with my clients—a space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered to grow.
Being a Licensed Clinical Psychologist has given me the privilege of working with some of the most courageous and resilient people. Founding Mindful Healing Counseling was inspired by my passion for creating inclusive and affirming therapy spaces for people from all walks of life. It’s an honor to hold space for others, guide them through their healing journeys, and help them move toward healthier, more joy-filled lives. Whether you're navigating life's challenges or seeking a safe place to grow, I’m here to walk alongside you on this path toward lasting change.
Growing up, I was always curious about the world around me. I wanted to understand the painful experiences of those closest to me, the unspoken family secrets, and what made relationships so complex. As I got older, I felt a deep desire to support others who were navigating difficult circumstances.
During my freshman year of college, a close friend trusted me enough to share their story of past trauma. As I continued my studies in psychology, I realized how many people in my life were silently struggling with their own crises. Those moments of listening, offering validation, and showing genuine compassion taught me how powerful connection can be—and it’s what sparked my passion for counseling, changing my life forever.
I went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology from the State University of New York, followed by my Master’s and Doctoral Degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology.
Now, as a therapist, my top priority is ensuring my clients feel truly seen, heard, and respected in their unique identities. I specialize in working with anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, postpartum anxiety and depression, women’s issues, and the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. I offer virtual therapy in Chicago, throughout the state of Illinois, and in over 30 states.
Curious about how I work? Here’s a glimpse:
I use a mix of therapeutic approaches tailored to meet your individual needs. These include cognitive-behavioral therapies, trauma-informed therapy, mindfulness, strengths-based, and relational approaches. I know that every person’s journey is unique, so I’ll collaborate with you to find what works best for you.
I believe counseling can benefit anyone who is open to it. Most importantly, I believe that healing, growth, and thriving are possible for everyone. Sometimes, we just need a little extra support, guidance, or knowledge to help us get there—and I’m here to walk that path with you.

MORE ABOUT ME
When I’m not supporting my clients, you’ll usually find me spending quality time with my family—it’s my favorite way to recharge. I’m all about a good beach vacation with warm, tropical vibes (bonus points if there’s a great sunset involved!). And when I’m home, you can bet I’m cozy on the couch, fully invested in a Law and Order: SVU marathon—because who doesn’t love Olivia Benson?
